Jewish Family Service Helped Turn My Life Around – Jovette’s Story

Meet Jovette. Now 35, she is one of eight children and lost both parents when she was about 20 years old. Around the same time, Jovette was in a serious car accident that left her then 10-month-old son Richard with a head injury and her with a long-term condition causing severe stomach aches and seizures.

She came to Jewish Family Service of Colorado seven years ago through a welfare-to-work program at the agency’s SHALOM Denver division. After completing the workforce training program, Jovette was offered a job as a mailing machine operator – a role critical to the organization’s assembly, packaging, and mailing operations.

Instead of collecting disability and social security, Jovette took the job and has been a proud and productive employee of JFS for more than six years.

“I’m very grateful for my job. It helped me stabilize my family so that my son could finish school successfully,” she said. “And, I get to be a role model for him. I’m living proof that someone can turn their life around through programs like this.”

Every day, Jewish Family Service of Colorado helps people like Jovette get their lives back on track. JFS helps more than 21,500, people across the Denver metro area each year who are facing a life challenge – people who otherwise may not get the help they need.

Help JFS by Cleaning Out Your Closet!

Did you know that you can donate your gently used clothing, shoes, and household items to support the mental health programs at JFS? The funds raised through Healing Minds will subsidize the cost of counseling services for our clients.

For your convenience, we have donation bins for clothing only located at our office in Tamarac Square, 3201 South Tamarac Drive in Denver. For household items, we will collect your donation from your home if you live in our pre-designated home pick-up area. Click here for a complete list of items that we can accept. All items donated to Jewish Family Service through its Healing Minds program are deductible for income tax purposes at their present fair market value. Internal Revenue Service Code places the responsibility for estimating the fair market value upon the donor rather than the agency receiving the gift. Contact your tax advisor with questions.

If you drop off clothing donations at our bins, please pick up a receipt at the front desk in our administrative office or a receipt will be provided if items are picked up at your home.

New Champion Crowned at Annual Group Home Croquet Tournament!

The JFS Group Home recently hosted its annual croquet tournament. In addition to the residents, several Group Home friends and supporters, including event organizer, Scott Friedman, attended the tournament. Several played, while others cheered on the players and enjoyed a BBQ dinner.

This year, Micah took the long-standing title of Champion away from Laurie! Congratulations, Micah!

In other Group Home news, Laurie and Micah recently competed in the Special Olympics and each took home several medals. Congrats to both Laurie and Micah!

Our Group Home is the only Kosher group home west of the Mississippi. Through the caring supervision of Jewish Family Service professionals, our eight adult residents reach their full potential while enjoying a Jewish cultural atmosphere and active social lives.

Happy 4th of July from JFS !!!

What does the 4th of July mean to you? Yana Vishnitsky, Russian immigrant and JFS President and CEO, says, "I am always grateful to be in a free country and I am reminded of this every time I celebrate a holiday like Thanksgiving and 4th of July."

We also posed this same question to some of our coworkers and asked how they were celebrating the holiday. The most common answers were:

• Freedom
• Baseball
• Fireworks
• BBQ
• Pool
• Bike Ride
• Parade
• Opera

And the funniest answer we received was "I am going to have a fifth on the fourth."
